Spread the Hashes

Spread the Hashes is a campaign to raise awareness that miners should mine at a variety of pools instead of concentrating the network's mining power at a few.

Please try to keep individual pools under 16% of total network hashes. This helps keep Litecoin safe by making it so even the top three pools joining up will not be able to do bad things.

The site Learn Cryptography has more information behind the risks of having pools grow to this size. That site makes light of the current situation (with Bitcoin nearing 51% on a single pool), but it especially applies to Litecoin right now, with the influx of new users.

As a miner, using P2Pool is the best way to spread the hashes. Although it's suggested you have over 1MH/s to mine effectively on P2Pool, you can use P2Pool even as a low-end, 500kH/s miner; the only downside to mining with a lower hashrate being delayed payments (not paid out per block, but every other/few blocks). Due to the decentralized nature of P2Pool, it can be 100% of the mining network and still be safe and secure for Litecoin -- no other pooled mining can make the same statement!
